PKSCA is an All-Volunteer Organization

The PKSCA is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our wonderful volunteers help us put on our cultural events including the dragon boat race, fundraising, maintaining our Traditional-Style Dragon Boats, and help with our participation in the Rose Festival parades. There are ample opportunities to take part in the community by way of donations, sponsorship, and volunteering your skills and time. We have short term and long term volunteer opportunities available. Come help build and maintain our programs throughout this exciting community.

PKSCA Structure

While the PKSCA Board oversees all cultural programs including the Portland Rose Festival Dragon Boat Race there is a distinct Race Committee that handles the day to day operations of the race itself. The Race Director reports to, and is part of the PKSCA Board. Both the PKSCA Board and Race Committee members have specific roles, and have varying volunteer needs. We are always looking for support from the community to maintain both our wider cultural programs throughout the city of Portland and the Portland Rose Festival Dragon Boat Race.

Support Methods

One can support us by way of volunteering their time in event specific short term manners, or long term engagement in a specific role. Donations can be made by individuals, institutions, or businesses. We also have 2 sponsorship levels for the Portland Rose Festival Dragon Boat Race, and are working on a sponsorship program for our wider cultural programs.

Additionally, individuals and companies can donate items for auction or raffle. Grants are fundamental to any non-profit organization. We are always seeking new grant opportunities as well as volunteers to help with grant writing, and managing our grant obligations. Another longer term volunteer opportunity is to become a member of the PKSCA board or the Race Committee. Working with current members helps create a solid succession plan and a vibrant leadership structure. If you are interested in joining as a member explore our volunteer job postings, or contact us at info@pksca.net to express your interest, and in what sort of position you are interested in.

Volunteer

PKSCA

The PKSCA has volunteer needs distinct from those of the Portland Rose Festival Dragon Boat Race and it’s race committee.

  • View our Volunteer Job Postings for a complete list of positions open.
  • Each year we have Shu-Te High-School students come from Kaohsiung to perform during the Portland Rose Festival. Host families across the Portland area provide an American home experience for two lovely and talented musicians and dancers who stay one week to tour and perform.
  • As Board Members retire or end their contract, positions open, viewable in the job postings. Expressing interest is always welcome, and can help pave the way for a succession plan. We can be contacted at info@pksca.net.

Portland Rose Festival Dragon Boat Race

Each local team is expected to provide 2 volunteers for race weekend, the 2nd weekend of June. However, this does not fulfill the entirety of our needs. Our short term needs are broken into 3 time frames: Pre-Race Weekend Prep, Race Weekend, and Post-Race Weekend Maintenance. These can be signed up for here as they come up on the calendar.

  • Some positions can be long term or recurring, which are listed in the Volunteer Job Postings.
  • The Dragon Boat Race has a great many different types of short and long term positions, including:
    • Race Weekend Volunteers
    • Boat/locker Maintenance and Painting
    • 40′ Trailer and forklift drivers.
    • Media/Social Media/Design
    • Start Boat, Finish Boat, Chase Boat Sound/Audio, Annoucers
    • Grant Writers
    • Marketing
    • Community Outreach
    • and many more.
  • As Race Committee Members retire positions become open viewable in the job postings. Expressing interest in an existing position is welcome and can help with creating succession plans. Reach out at info@pksca.net.

Sponsorship

Corporate Sponsorship

We have 2 levels of corporate sponsorship: Level 1 sponsors the event, Level 2 sponsors a team and the event. Sponsoring a team includes covering the cost of team registration. This can be a team made up of your own corporate personnel, a team you have created, or a team you have selected and have mutually chosen to sponsor…Learn More

Direct Team Sponsorship

Sponsoring an individual team directly is not managed, or overseen by the PKSCA. However, each team has the ability to seek out sponsors under whatever terms they mutually agree to. This can include, but is not limited to paying for part or all of a teams registration fee, uniforms, food, paddling gear, and the team’s name. Direct sponsorships can be highly specific small acts of support to fully backing a team. A sponsor can be friends, family, small businesses, corporations, or a community. The PKSCA and Race Committee do not directly take part in these agreements, but can facilitate introductions between sponsors and teams if you would like to reach out via info@pksca.net or our social media.

Donations

Cash Donations

Your donations will aid in the ongoing work of the Portland-Kaohsiung Sister City Association. This work includes the Portland Rose Festival Dragon Boat Race as well as delegation exchanges with Kaohsiung, scholarships for students in both Portland and Kaohsiung, and our cultural programs. On the donation page you will be able to choose an amount, whether to make a single or recurring donation, and you will have the option to define how you would like your donation to be used.

Raffles

Raffle tickets are sold during the race season (April through June). The raffle is open to the public as well as our dragon boat community. We announce the raffle to our teams, through our social media accounts, and via our website. Each year the PKSCA holds a welcome dinner the Friday before race weekend for the Kaohsiung delegates, board members, and Portland city officials. During this dinner raffle winners are selected. Raffle winners are announced here and informed individually. If you are interested in donating an item, or items for a raffle please reach out to us at info@pksca.net.

Auctions

While we currently do not have an annual auction we may hold auctions and silent auctions, either online or during an event. If you are interested in hosting an auction, donating an item or items for auction, or have a suggestion for an event at which we may hold an auction please feel free to contact us at info@pksca.net.

Your relationship to the event, and if you have selected level 2, your team, does not have to end there. Additional sponsorship agreements can be reached with the PKSCA Board. For instance, corporate sponsors have donated food for our volunteers during the race weekend, or shirts for our volunteers with a logo of our choosing on the front, and theirs logo on the back. Essentially, we are happy to entertain additional ways we can collaborate with our sponsors. Sponsored teams also have further options for interaction, including but not limited to naming the team, and help with the purchase and design of their uniforms.
